What is Nickel Allergy?

Nickel allergy is one of the more common forms of Allergic Contact Dematitis (ACD), a hypersensitivity reaction that occurs when the body's immune system reacts against Nickel. It is not a condition you are born with; it develops after continuous contact with Nickel that "sensitises" the immune system. Further contact with Nickel causes the skin to develop typical systems of ACD - dryness, a red itchy rash, blisters or hives.

Once a Nickel Allergy develops there is nothing to cure it, the best solution being to avoid contact with items containing Nickel. However, this is difficult as Nickel is present in many buttons, zips, belt buckles and jewellery items.

Why is Titanium Skin Friendly?

Our products are made from Solid Grade 2 Titanium, there is no plating and no Nickel. Grade 2 Titanium is unalloyed and considered commercially pure (CP Titanium). The composition of Grade 2 Titanium is as follows - 99.2% Titanium , max 0.1 % Carbon, max 0.3% Iron, max 0.015% Hydrogen, max 0.03% Nitrogen, max 0.25% Oxygen.

Titanium is a lightweight and extremely strong metal resistant to corrosion. Its uses are diverse, from aircraft to the medical industry for the manufacture of replacement joints.

You may find other companies claiming to sell Nickel-Free products. However, a lot of these products simply have a very thin layer of plating which is Nickel-free. In a very short time the plating wears away, leaving your skin exposed to the metal underneath, which does contain Nickel! All our products are made from Solid Grade 2 Commercially Pure Titanium. There is no plating.
